Sculptural portray of James Earl Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner
Civl rights movement © Dr. Gloria M. Norris Yoyita

This sculpture is dedicated to the Civil Rights movement and the three of its workers who died in Mississippi: James Earl Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner. I wanted to portray them for what they lived for, the civil rights that we all have.

Chaney is speaking his arms are extended, symbolizing Freedom of Speech. Schwerner is carrying the Torah, symbolizing Freedom of Religion. Goodman has his hands over his friends' shoulders, symbolizing Freedom of Assembly. There is also a locked ballot box, and in front there is a magnolia with an eternal flame.

Yoyita is a figurative artist from Nicaragua, trained as a physician, who fell in love with art visiting European museums. Later in life she dedicated to painting and sculpture. In painting, she was influenced by Renaissance artists and Greek Hellenistic in her figurative sculptures ie. Contrapposto. Part of Yoyita's work are religious images, some with a Byzantine art influence (as the icons) and renaissance flavor, for these works she uses egg tempera techniques, mixing her own paints with pigments and egg for egg tempera and oils for oil paints.

The portrait has always been a big attraction for Yoyita in her quest to capture the personality of the subject and perhaps his soul. Being these portraits in oils, pastel, watercolors, miniature or bust sculpture.

Yoyita finds the human form graceful and inspiring, figurative art has always been a challenge in painting and sculpture, she is a great admirer of Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Diego Velzquez, Zurbarn.

Realistic landscapes and seascapes are found very often among yoyita's works. She also produces still life, miniature art and religious art. Some of her sculptures have a social theme inspired by the constitution of United States.

Mississippi and the tropics are themes that are revisited often, as well as flowers. On the light side, Yoyita likes to paint pets with whimsical attitudes. Photography is part of her portfolio.
